Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Astronomy

Class Format

In my face-to-face classes, I use a semi-flipped classroom. That means you are assigned readings prior to class, and we spend class time discussing the content and completing exercises based on the reading. However, I also supplement the reading with more traditional lectures as needed. I focus a lot on in-class team-based work, which means you are assigned a permanent team at the beginning of the semester that you will work with on in-class activities and labs. Working regularly in teams helps develop communication and teamwork skills that are highly desirable in today’s workforce.

Resource Use

The textbook I use is freely available online. Students will also benefit from a laptop or computer with reliable internet access and a portable device they can bring to class to access Poll Everywhere. I also recommend students taking ASTR 122 have a scientific calculator, especially for labs and tests. Students will also have opportunities to use telescopes and binoculars for nighttime and solar observing sessions throughout the semester.

Assessment

I assess students through numerous channels including short daily reading quizzes, in-class activities/discussions, homework, labs, and unit exams. There is also a cumulative final exam. If a student scores a 70% or lower on a unit exam, they can earn back up to 80% of the missed points by completing an oral assessment. This opportunity is limited to two unit exams per semester. Students should reach out to me with any questions regarding unit test make-ups.

Homework Policy

There will be one to two homework assignments assigned for each unit. These are to be completed independently outside of class. Students will be given a minimum of seven days to complete each assignment. Late work is accepted but 25% of the total possible points are deducted for each day an assignment is late. If an assignment is more than four days late, it will not be accepted.

Attendance Policy

Missing class will almost certainly adversely impact your grade. While I do not assign formal points for attendance, there are regular in-class reading quizzes and assignments that make up a substantial part of your grade. Additionally, in-class discussions and activities are designed to strengthen your understanding of new and complex topics, so your attendance is strongly encouraged.

Availability

I hold five student office hours a week (1 per day). However, if these times do not work for you, I am happy to schedule additional one on one meetings. I am also available through email and typically respond within 24 hours during the work week. If you email over the weekend, I will likely respond the following Monday.
