  • focusing on economics and land use during the 19th century in the American Midwest, as well as the impact of warfare and violence, slavery and subordination
  • archaeology in Missouri and Kansas related to the Border Wars of the Civil War and to General Orders No. 11 and the Burned District of Missouri (including Jackson, Cass, Bates and Vernon counties)
  • early hunter-gatherer mortuary studies in Baja California Sur, Mexico
  • history of anthropological and archaeological thought
  • archaeological method and theory
