- JCCC designated as military-friendly school
November 11, 2016
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College once again has been recognized as a military-friendly school.
Victory Media, the originator of Military Friendly® education and career resources for veterans and their families, advised JCCC on Thursday, Oct. 10, of its inclusion on its 2017 lists of schools and employers that they say lead the way in providing civilian opportunities for veterans.
Two years ago, JCCC opened a Veteran & Military Resource Center in COM 305, said Kena Zumalt, coordinator of veteran services at the college. The center is committed to providing an environment for veterans to pursue their academic and personal goals, explore learning experiences and be involved on campus.
This year, JCCC was selected to be a partner school with PAVE (Peer Advisers for Veterans Education), a nationally recognized peer mentor program for veterans.
PAVE connects incoming student veterans with student veterans already on campus in order to help them navigate college life, identify challenges they are facing, refer them to the appropriate resource on or off campus, and provide ongoing support to their academic and personal ventures.
All students with military experience - past or present - and military dependents are welcome to visit the center to ask questions, find resources or just unwind between classes. Staff is available to answer questions and connect students with resources. The lounge area provides a place to study or hang out with other students.
Military Friendly® is part of the ratings division of Victory Media, a service-disabled, veteran-owned business. Military Friendly® rates colleges and companies on their programs to recruit and retain veterans and military spouses.
