Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Horticulture

Class Format

Hort 115, Home Horticulture: Textbook information will be supplemented by PowerPoint presentations during lecture, which will be posted online to facilitate note taking.  Class is informal, and students are encouraged to ask questions and add comments to the discussion.  Course is an introductory survey of basic horticultural principles.

Hort 165, Arboriculture: Lecture will be driven by PowerPoint presentations, as there is no required text.  Presentations are posted online before each class period, to facilitate note taking.  Class is informal, and students are encouraged to ask questions and add comments to the discussion.  Course is an intensive study of tree biology, physiology, and management practices.  Instructor is an ISA Certified Arborist, with nearly a decade of experience in the field of Arboriculture.

Class Policies:  Attendance is required, and a portion of the grade for each course.  Unannounced quizzes are routinely given, to further reinforce the necessity of attendance.  Students are expected to be active participants in the lecture, to facilitate critical thinking, and communication skills.

Laboratory Sessions: Will consist of hands on demonstrations, and experiments designed to reinforce key principles.  Each course will have an individual Final Lab Project, which will include a presentation element.  Labs often consist of lengthy walking tours of campus to view plants in the landscape, so proper attire is necessary.

Resource Use

Textbook is required for Hort 115, and will reinforce the material presented in class.  Relevant chapters should be read before class.  No text is required for Hort 165.

Homework will be assigned periodically throughout the semester, with corresponding due dates given.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required, and points are earned for both lecture and lab.
