Assessment
For GEOS130-Physical Geology classes: There will generally be six exams that consist of multiple choice, matching, definitions, listing, diagrams, short-answer, and essay questions, accounting for 58% of your grade. Exams, assessing your comprehension of geological subject matter covered during online lecture, homework assignments, and textbook study. No exam scores will be dropped.
There are also three lab exams worth 25% of your grade total that will consist of subjects including, but not limited to: mineral and rock identification, analysis of geologic and geomorphologic structures and maps, and interpretation of topographic and hydrologic maps and photos. No lab exam scores will be dropped.
Unless the student has an officially recognized learning disability, the student must finish the exam in the time allowed. A student with a recognized disability can receive exam accommodations with the appropriate documentation from Access Services. See ADA Compliance Section above for more information.
Homework Policy:
For GEOS130 – Physical Geology: We graph and use geologic data and images to analyze and discuss trends and to interpret processes on Earth in the past and present. We study current events, often with real-time data, by using earthquake, volcano, and river web sites and apps.
Late exams/assignments/lab exercises are assessed a deduction of 5% per day. Likewise, if a student submits the wrong file or their work is illegible, the Late Work and Makeup Policy applies. This means your work will be deducted 5% per day if you need to resubmit. As such, you are strongly encouraged to check the correct file uploaded correctly.
The student is responsible for notifying the instructor if he or she missed a due date. Generally, there is no option to make-up exams, homework, etc. As stated above, any work not submitted by 11:59pm CST on the due date are assessed a deduction of 5% per day. Again, the student is responsible for notifying the instructor if he or she missed a due date. A make-up exam or assignment will not be considered for an unexcused absence. A make-up exam or assignment will only be considered for an excused absence (at the instructor’s discretion). If the absence is a result of sickness or a true emergency, a written medical/police/fire/etc. excuse is required. If the absence is due to a school-related function, appropriate documentation of the conflict must be presented at least one week (7 days) in advance of the scheduled conflict.
Assignments are submitted to Canvas, or emailed to the instructor, using *.doc, *.docx, *.xls, *.kml, *.kmz, or *.pdf files. All assignments, lab exercises, quizzes and exams must be completed in the original format provided – NO EXCEPTIONS. Assignments provided in summary format, or answers typed on a separate document will not be graded.
Attendance Policy
Johnson County Community College expects students to participate in all instructional activities. Online courses are no different from classroom courses in this regard; however, participation is defined in a different manner. Student “attendance” in online courses will be defined as active participation in the course as tracked by weekly mechanisms for student participation, which can be documented by any or all of the following methods: student tracking records in the Canvas learning management system; submission/completion of assignments; and communication with the instructor.
