Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Economics

Class Format

Online Courses:

A wide array of resources is utilized to learn course content. These resources include textbook readings and numerous other resources found at the course website that contain many learning activities. Other selected readings may also be utilized and will be found at the course website along with links to observe films and lectures.  Students are expected to Login to the course website at least three times each week. Participation in Weekly Discussion Forums is required.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

My traditional in-class courses will primarily be delivered through a lecture series format. However, occasional student participation in class discussions is encouraged.

Resource Use

Book: Required

Calculator: Optional, but recommended

Software: No additional software is required.

Assessment

Online Courses:

A student’s grade is determined by participation in the weekly online Discussion Forums, completion of Chapter Quizzes and other tests, and in some courses a few Short Papers are also due to be submitted at the course website. My online courses are completed totally online—so there is never any need for any student to step foot on the JCCC campus when they take one of my courses online.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

A student’s grade is determined by Class Attendance and Participation, completion of Homework, a few Short Papers, and the completion of typically 4 Exams.

Homework Policy

Some homework may be required.

Attendance Policy

Online Courses:

Online students are “required” to Login to the course website at least three times per week if they wish to earn the points for participating in the weekly Discussion Forums. However, the Economics Department’s policy is NOT to Drop a student for lack of attendance.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

Some points are allocated for Attendance and In-Class Participation. So, regular attendance is expected. However, the Economics Department’s policy is NOT to Drop a student for lack of attendance.

Additional Information

I try to administer my courses in a manner that lets students feel comfortable about asking questions and participating in discussions. I want my students to appreciate the relevance of economics to their lives and to be able to intelligently discuss important economic issues of the day. Therefore, I try to teach my courses in an unintimidating and application-oriented manner as possible. Perhaps most importantly, I really want learning to be fun!
