Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Chemistry

Class Format

Lecture-style using PowerPoint slides is typical. Example problems are worked on the board. Some in-class problems are worked by students. Class participation and asking questions is highly encouraged.

Resource Use

Textbook required for independent reading, study and practice problems.

Non-programmable (non-graphing), scientific calculator is required for use during class, quizzes and exams.

Online homework program required to purchase; majority of homework grade derives from this.

Lab Section: Lab manual, lab coat, goggles and a calculator are required.

Assessment

The student’s grade is based on 4 or 5 unit exams, a final exam, quizzes, and homework.

Lab Section: Lab grade is based on lab reports, quizzes, and a Lab exam.

Homework Policy

The majority of the required homework grade is based on the online homework. Other forms of homework may also be required.

Lab Section: Some labs have a pre-lab assignment that must be done outside of class and turned in at the beginning of lab. The lab must be read before attending lab. Some lab reports will be turned in by the end of the lab period, and some will be taken home and completed.

Attendance Policy

Students who do not attend class tend to do poorly in the course. Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding. However, absences are NOT part of the grading formula. Quizzes cannot be made up, but one or two quizzes will be dropped at the end of the semester.

Lab Section: Attendance in lab is mandatory. A student must be present in order to complete the lab activity and complete the report. Lab quizzes cannot be made up, and one lab quiz is dropped at the end of the semester.
