OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Johnson County Community College’s Model United Nations team received an Overall Outstanding Delegation award at the National Model United Nations conference in New York this month. The JCCC team represented Nigeria at National Model UN.

In addition, JCCC team member Andrew Snow was chosen by the conference for the position of Chair of the International Atomic Energy Agency. This position involves a rigorous set of applications and interviews, while also requiring a working knowledge of the NMUN Rules of Procedure and prior Model United Nations experience. A Chair works with their Director and Assistant Director on procedural and administrative tasks that ensure the committee operates efficiently.

“Model UN brings out what you’re going to find in career development,” said Snow. “You can capitalize on communication skills, establishing a sense of personal responsibility and leadership opportunities.”

Model United Nations is an extracurricular activity that encourages students to learn about diplomacy, international relations and how the United Nations works. It strengthens participants’ speaking, debating and writing skills, and builds critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

The JCCC Model UN has a successful track record in competing with major universities and colleges from around the world. The team has won multiple awards over the past 15 years. Find more information at blogs.jccc.edu/mun.
