- JCCC receives 2016 grant to train veterans in truck-driving program
October 19, 2016
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College is one of seven technical and community colleges across the nation to receive a 2016 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The $104,376 grant will provide full-ride scholarships for up to 25 veterans and their immediate families to complete the 10-week Professional Truck Driving Program at JCCC.
The program, which leads to a commercial driver’s license, is taught by experienced truck drivers and trainers – three of whom are also veterans. JCCC’s Continuing Education branch hopes to begin awarding scholarships to students who sign up for the next training session in February.
Commercial trucking is a high-demand and fast-growing industry that offers flexibility, good pay and numerous employment opportunities. Professional truck drivers can earn up to $60,000 in their first year of driving.
For more information, please email Josh Smith, JCCC’s program director of transportation, or call him at 913-469-4446.
