Hear Michaeleen Doucleff's first-hand reports about parenting strategies learned from living with families in three of the world’s most venerable communities: Mayan families in Mexico, Inuit families above the Arctic Circle, and Hadzabe families in Tanzania, and how she applied their techniques to her own parenting with striking results. Doucleff will report on conversations with psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, and sociologists, and describe how these strategies impact all children, plus answer audience questions. Michaeleen Doucleff, PhD, is an award winning journalist, New York Timesbestselling author, and a prominent voice on parenting and child psychology. As a correspondent for NPR’s Science Desk and NPR’s global health and development blog, Doucleff focuses on disease outbreaks, cross-cultural parenting, and children’s health. In 2014, she was part of the team that earned a George Foster Peabody award for their coverage of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. She is also the author of Dopamine Kids. Doucleff has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree in viticulture and enology from the University of California, Davis.
RaisingKC 2026: A Community Event
A partnership between Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and the Raised with Love and Limits Foundation, this annual event is a bi-state gathering of parents, educators, coaches and all who touch the lives of children, including healthcare professionals, nonprofit leaders and more—each of whom, together and individually, "raise KC".
The mission of RaisingKC 2026 is to bring new voices to the bi-state community to educate, inspire and motivate positive mental health and wellbeing by building safe, stable, nurturing adult-child relationships. RaisingKC 2026 will do just that—show why, how and what science says is important to know about how these relationships save lives.

A bi-state, public health campaign launched in 2024, RaisingKC is led by the Raised with Love and Limits Foundation, a national 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe, stable and nurturing adult-child relationships to prevent toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences.
