In the philosophy program at JCCC, you learn more about reason, existence, knowledge, language, and other values of the human mind.

Understanding fundamental truths of ourselves and the world can help us to better understand the world we live in and our day-to-day relationships.

What will I learn in JCCC's Philosophy program?

The philosophy program at JCCC allows you to ponder an abundance of classic questions, such as:

  • What is real?
  • Is it possible to know anything and to prove it?
  • Do humans have free will?
  • What is the good life philosophy?

You’ll find yourself in deep discussion with other fellow students about existence, values, reasons, ethics, and how we should live. The program also gives you the ability to evaluate current events using reason and logic. The skills you’ll learn in JCCC’s philosophy program will help you to tackle other challenging courses throughout your studies.

Compared to most community colleges, the philosophy courses at JCCC are a lot more diverse. You can learn the elements of careful reasoning with courses like Asian Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Intro to Ethics, and Logic and Thinking.

Other JCCC courses, such as Bioethics and Environmental Ethics, will enlighten you on scientific, political, and legal issues relevant to human biology and today’s environmental problems. These classes could also count toward a science credit, so check with your academic advisor.

Finally, Business Ethics will give you an in-depth look at the big picture of business practices. This is a required course for degrees in business at four-year schools. However, at JCCC, you can receive the same quality instruction at a fraction of the cost.

Several classes will also transfer to Kansas Board of Regents public postsecondary schools as well as many other four-year institutions.

Why JCCC?

As published authors, JCCC faculty regularly interact with humanities professors at area four-year schools. JCCC is also one of just 17 U.S. regional centers for the Asian Studies Development Program of the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii.

Other reasons to study philosophy at JCCC include:

  • Small classes sizes that allow you to ask questions, engage in discussions and connect with classmates and professors.
  • Convenient online classes for many courses and programs, including the philosophy program.
  • Affordable costs for all students.
  • Beautiful campus located conveniently near the Kansas City metro area.
