Journalism and Media Communications is all about finding and telling the story. Whether it’s reporting on breaking news, executing an advertising strategy, hosting a podcast or coordinating a social media campaign, it all comes down to crafting the perfect message. Our Journalism and Media Communications program will teach you how.

What Will I Learn in JCCC’s Journalism and Media Communications Courses?

Get hands-on learning in our Journalism and Media Communications courses. Understand how mass media shapes our society. Choose courses from news writing, advertising, video production, public relations, photojournalism and rotating timely topics like social media and podcasting.

Throughout our Journalism and Media Communications courses, you will learn how to:

  • Produce news and sports segments for television and radio
  • Create professional public relations campaigns
  • Write eye-catching and engaging advertising
  • Capture newsworthy events with photography and video
  • Work with real-world PR and social media clients

Why JCCC’s Journalism and Media Communications Courses?

At JCCC, all Journalism and Media Communications courses are taught by instructors who have extensive industry knowledge and experience, on both a local and international scale. You’ll learn from experts who will show you the ropes of the strategic communications industry. Smaller class sizes ensure you receive one-on-one time to ask questions and get to know your instructors.

Valuable, real-world experience

You will work in our student-run media studios. Gain experience using industry-standard cameras, recording soundboards, and film and photography editing equipment. You can also choose to work with real business clients, advising them on public relations, marketing communications and social media campaigns.

Local internship opportunities are available, or immerse yourself in more in-depth learning with faculty-directed independent study. 

Even as a freshman, at JCCC you can get supervised on-the-job training while earning college credit at the same time. Former students say this experience is priceless and pointed them toward a career path they never would have found otherwise!

Transfer Your Credits

The credits you earn in JCCC’s Journalism and Media Communications courses can be transferred to most four-year programs. JCCC works closely with nearby colleges and universities, such as the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, to ensure you will have a smooth transition.

Take advantage of our Transfer Services if you choose to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in Journalism, Media, Communications Studies, Public Relations or Advertising.

Studying Journalism and Media Communications offers many career opportunities. Industries including news media, corporate communications, digital marketing and strategic communications are constantly growing, evolving and looking to hire new talent.

Recent JCCC graduates are currently working in marketing management for Union Station KC, communications for ArtsKC, as television anchors and as radio personalities on local stations.
