Learn a new language, communicate with Spanish speakers, and gain a skill that will get you ahead in your career. At Johnson County Community College, we have Spanish courses to fit your experience level, whether you are learning Spanish for the first time or have studied for several years.

What Will I Learn in JCCC’s Spanish Courses?

Learn to read, write, speak and understand basic Spanish in as little as one semester. Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the United States and is widely spoken in more than 20 countries in the Americas and Europe. Your skills will be in demand.

In JCCC’s Spanish courses, you’ll study grammar, conversation, composition and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Focus on long-term learning to get the most out of your Spanish courses. Apply what you learn in class to everyday conversations with other Spanish speakers. Increase your fluency as you:

  • Enjoy an interactive classroom environment.
  • Write in Spanish about relevant topics in your daily life.
  • Listen to passages in Spanish to train your ear and gather information from speakers with diverse backgrounds.
  • Read and watch videos about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking regions of the world.
  • Visit our Spanish tutors in person or online for extra practice at no cost to you.

In addition to Elementary Spanish I and II and Intermediate Spanish I and II, you can take an occupational Spanish class to help you in the hospitality industry. As your skills and fluency improve, consider taking conversational Spanish to help you work with Spanish natives or to use when traveling.

If you grew up speaking Spanish but have little or no formal Spanish grammar training, Spanish for Heritage and Advanced Speakers of Spanish is specifically for you.

See our guidelines for enrolling in Spanish classes (PDF). You may also use this placement tool for enrolling in the right JCCC Spanish course.

Do you need to take the placement exam? See exam information on the main Foreign Language page.
