The Film and Media Studies program at Johnson County Community College allows you to explore your passion of creating, editing, and producing in the filmmaking industry.

What will I learn in JCCC’s Film and Media Studies Program?

Time-based media is an artistic tool that conveys strong emotion and powerful imagery. In JCCC’s Film and Media Studies program, you will learn to think critically about the media you consume and create. You’ll assess art in terms of its cultural, political, social, and historical impact. You will also learn to use and recognize techniques that will evoke the intended viewer’s response to your work.

You will start by studying the techniques, theories, and methodologies used in filmmaking. You will learn to interpret the signs, syntaxes, and structures of cinematic language. See how time-based media is used in fine arts, entertainment, and business.

Use the concepts of time, space, composition, light, color, and sound to express your conceptual ideas. Apply your skills to create films using single-camera techniques. Showcase your work in gallery exhibitions, film festivals, or on your own YouTube channel.

Deepen your learning with classes in:

  • Fine Arts
  • Photography
  • Digital Imaging
  • Journalism
  • Recording Arts
  • Animation
  • Art History
  • Theatre

You may have the opportunity exhibit your work through these outlets:

  • Student Gallery: Located on the third floor of the Student Center, this gallery showcases some of the best work by JCCC student artists.
  • Mind’s Eye: A literary magazine produced yearly and features students’ artistic works.
  • Art Competitions and Exhibitions: Take advantage of these events at local, regional, and national levels, such as those sponsored by League for Innovation in the Community College. Put your work in front of industry professionals and give your pieces a wider community audience.
