Job shadowing or internship — what’s the difference?
Actually, more than you think.
Job shadowing:
- A great way to begin career exploration
- A chance to engage in experiential learning through observation and personal interaction
- It's short! Lasts just a few hours with a professional to observe a typical workday
When possible, you will meet with a faculty member in advance to get an idea of what to expect and tips to maximize what you take away from the day.
Internships
- Increase your marketability
- Learn and strengthen your practical skills
- Develop as a professional
- Define yourself and shape your path
- Increase your career readiness
For an internship, you will need to:
- Meet with JCCC’s Internship Coordinator at least two semesters before a potential internship.
- Complete an internship application and gain approval from the coordinator one semester before your desired internship start date.
- Search campus resources for an internship that interests you.
- Visit the Career Development Center to get help on creating a professional résumé and cover letter.
What’s the same?
To participate in an internship or job shadowing, you must:- Be currently enrolled at JCCC
- Be 18 or older
- Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
Both experiences complement the learning you do in the classroom.
