  • First-hand career knowledge from an industry professional

  • An introduction to business culture

Job shadowing or internship — what’s the difference?

Actually, more than you think.

Job shadowing:

  • A great way to begin career exploration
  • A chance to engage in experiential learning through observation and personal interaction
  • It's short! Lasts just a few hours with a professional to observe a typical workday

When possible, you will meet with a faculty member in advance to get an idea of what to expect and tips to maximize what you take away from the day.

  • Increase your marketability
  • Learn and strengthen your practical skills
  • Develop as a professional
  • Define yourself and shape your path
  • Increase your career readiness

For an internship, you will need to:

  • Meet with JCCC’s Internship Coordinator at least two semesters before a potential internship.
  • Complete an internship application and gain approval from the coordinator one semester before your desired internship start date.
  • Search campus resources for an internship that interests you.
  • Visit the Career Development Center to get help on creating a professional résumé and cover letter.

What’s the same?

To participate in an internship or job shadowing, you must:
  • Be currently enrolled at JCCC
  • Be 18 or older
  • Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA

Both experiences complement the learning you do in the classroom.

Use JobLinks to find shadowing or internship opportunities. Create an account if you don’t already have one and update it if you do. Work with Career Development Coaches to access materials and information that maximize the benefits you gain during either experience.
