OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Model United Nations teamfrom Johnson County Community College received an Outstanding Position Paper award and four honorable mention awards Feb. 21-25 in St. Louis, Mo.

The team portrayed New Zealand and South Africa for the 2017 Midwest Model United Nations Conference.

Hanan Boukhima (Overland Park, formerly Casablanca, Morocco) represented South Africa and received an Outstanding Position Paper award presented at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

In addition, Edward Rosson (Lansing, Kansas) and Allison Koelzer both represent New Zealand and received Honorable Mention awards 

Team members Cina Murray (Olathe) and Allison Koelzer (Gardner) were recognized for their work on the Economic and Social Council Plenary session. Megan Deitz (Lawrence, Kansas) was recognized for her work on Security Council. Mark Rushkikh (Overland Park, formerly Poltava, Ukraine) was chosen by the conference for a conference staff position.

Additional team members include Makayla Johnson (Baldwin City, Kansas), Donald Roth (Overland Park), Jon Michael Smith (Shawnee), Tania Teran Leon (Overland Park and Chihuahua, Mexico), Yan Jiang (Overland Park), Jarar Bangash (Overland Park), Paige Sato (Kansas City, Mo.), Jaycee Zeck (Gardner), Andrea Pineda Lugo (Olathe and Valencia, Venezuela) and Lacee Roe (Lawrence). 

This latest conference builds on 13 years of success for JCCC, during which the team has received awards at each of the last 38 conferences it has attended.

Team adviser is Brian Wright, professor of political science (Overland Park). Wright is on the board of directors for the International Relations Council, a Kansas City organization.

The JCCC Model UN team will next attend the National Model United Nations and Leadership Conference in New York City, held at the United Nations in April. JCCC will represent the country of Denmark.
