- Model U.N. Receives Distinguished Delegation Award
April 4, 2016
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Model United Nations team from Johnson County Community College received Distinguished Delegation award at the 2016 National Model United Nations conference for their representation of the Kenya.
In addition, three JCCC team members were chosen by the conference for staff positions. They include:
- Daniel Crist, Overland Park, co-chair of the Commission on the Status of Women
- Donald Roth, Prairie Village, co-chair General Assembly Forth Committee
- Megan Deitz, Lawrence, co-chair of the General Assembly Committee
The conference, held with the United Nations facility in New York City as a backdrop, ran from March 27 to 31. More than 5,000 students attended.
JCCC was evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Remaining in character, defined as advocating your assigned country’s position in a manner consistent with economic, social and geopolitical constraints
- Participating in committee, evaluated both during formal and informal (caucusing) sessions
- Proper use of the rules of procedure, since NMUN uses the rules of procedure to facilitate effective workings of committee and debate
“The National conference was a great learning experience,” said participant Makayla Johnson of Baldwin City, Kansas, adding that she used “problem-solving, team-building and research skills.”
Additional JCCC students attending included: Nicki Joy Karstens, Overland Park; Frida Lara, Overland Park; Enrique Deluna, Overland Park; Mark Ruskikh, Poltava, Ukraine; Theodore Bennett, Stilwell; Brittany Gindle, Overland Park; Briauna Jarvis, Overland Park; Sarah Lamb, Olathe; Connor Mayhan, Overland Park; Meghan Fuller, Shawnee; Bridget Brown, Lawrence; Lacee Roe, Lawrence; and Sarah White, Overland Park.
The team’s adviser is Dr. Brian Wright, professor of political science, and co-advisor is Aaron Swift, administrative assistant for the Center for Student Involvement.###
