OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Model United Nations team from Johnson County Community College received an Honorable Mention Delegation Award plus two position paper awards for its portrayal of France and Vietnam at the 2016 Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference in St. Louis.

The conference, held Feb.10 to 13 at Union Station, brought together college and university students from across North and South America to emulate the diplomacy of the United Nations.

JCCC sent 20 students; three students (Sarah White, Daniel Crist, and Suhaib Azzeh, all of Overland Park) were chosen to be part of the conference staff that oversees and manages the conference.

JCCC was evaluated by the conference on the following criteria for the delegation award:

  • Remaining in character: Defined as advocating your assigned country’s position in a manner consistent with economic, social and geopolitical constraints
  • Participating in committee: Evaluated both during formal and informal (caucusing) sessions
  • Proper use of the rules of procedure: MMUN uses the rules of procedure to facilitate effective workings of committee and debate.

“The St. Louis conference was a great learning experience,” said participant Makayla Johnson of Baldwin City, Kansas, adding that she used “problem-solving, team-building and research skills.”

Additional JCCC students attending included: Nicki Joy Karstens, Overland Park; Frida Lara, Overland Park; Austin Brubaker, Olathe; Enrique Deluna, Overland Park; Mark Ruskikh, Poltava, Ukraine; Theodore Bennett, Stilwell; Brittany Gindle, Overland Park; Briauna Jarvis, Overland Park; Khusrav Sharifov, Lenexa; Sarah Lamb, Olathe; Connor Mayhan, Overland Park; Donald Roth, Overland Park; Meghan Fuller, Overland Park; Bridget Brown, Lawrence, Kansas; Lacee Roe, Lawrence; and Megan Deitz, Lawrence.
