Overland Park, Kan.  — The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has recently announced that Johnson County Community College (JCCC) has been awarded a total of $20,000 in grants to support adult and family literacy.

“The Dollar General Foundation has been an important and faithful partner in supporting adult and family literacy in our community,” noted Kate Allen, Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Government Affairs at Johnson County Community College.

JCCC was awarded $10,000 to support its Migrant Family Literacy program, and $10,000 to support adult literacy within the Johnson County Adult Education program. Johnson County Adult Education provides educational resources for adult English-language learners, for adults seeking to improve basic reading, writing or math skills, and for adults seeking to earn a high-school equivalency (GED). Students in the Johnson County Adult Education program learn to speak, read and write English; improve math skills; learn basic life skills including use of technology; complete high school credentials; earn technical credentials; and /or prepare for success in college.

“We are honored to fund literacy and education initiatives, which support our mission of Serving Others,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018 and a legacy of helping people improve their lives through literacy and education. Including this grant, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has provided more than $154 million in funding to help more than 10 million people. We believe these programs can have a positive impact on the communities we serve and we look forward to continuing to partner with organizations dedicated to making a difference in the lives of millions of Americans.”

About Johnson County Adult Education

Johnson County Adult Education (JCAE) serves approximately 1,500 students annually: 600 Adult Basic Education/GED students and 900 English language learners. ABE/GED students work on individualized study plans and in small groups and/or online to focus on the specific content and skills needed to accomplish their goals. About 150 volunteers donate over 10,000 hours per year to tutoring students in adult education classrooms. English language learners are assessed and placed in one of four levels of classes based on their reading and listening proficiency. Then, they study a curriculum that emphasizes life and workplace skills as well as English language proficiency. An English Connection class helps non-native speakers solidify their language skills for success in credit classes taught in English. In addition, JCAE operates several related programs, including classes for underprepared college students, combination GED and career credential programs, and coaching on setting and attaining academic and professional goals. JCAE is sponsored by Johnson County Community College with support from the Johnson County Library. The Dollar General grants will be used to purchase quality children’s books for distribution to low-income and disadvantaged children in our community, and to purchase a reading curriculum designed specifically for adult English language learners.
