Marc Chaplin, 19, is wise beyond his years. "I know a good life is one that is lived by giving."

Marc Chaplin is a Johnson County Community College student in the Honors Program. He started a service-learning project during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know that a good life is one that is lived by giving,” he said. “I have always wanted to go out and start volunteering weekly or monthly, but I have never had the time and the motivation to do so. I suddenly realized now I had both.”

For his project, Chaplin was required to put in 20 volunteer hours and write a reflection paper on how it has changed him and how it has helped the community.

“I chose Harvesters because I had volunteered at the facility before and found that I really enjoyed it. I felt quite safe and well taken care of,” he said. “Although I don't have a specific career goal yet, I know I want to do something that helps others.”

Harvesters distributes food through its network of more than 760 agencies in a 26-county region of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.
