Businesses need proficient office admins on the job. JCCC’s Business Office Technology program delivers.

Business Office Technology (BOT) students believe their college experience points to one thing: success. With collaboration from the College’s Video Services staff, program completers from Beth Ann Johnstone’s Business Office Simulation class created a video aimed at prospective students. The video features alumni and current students talking about how the BOT program prepared them for their careers.

“This program is great for students who want to go into business but are not four-year college bound,” said Johnstone. She has been teaching students the ins and outs of the administrative assistant world for seven years at JCCC as an adjunct professor and 27 years as a high school business teacher.

The video highlights BOT alumni who are fulfilling their career dreams by working for local businesses, law firms and medical centers, with some transferring to businesses across the country.

“There’s more to being an administrative assistant than answering phones and filling the coffee,” said Melissa McCloud, who earned an AAS and is working toward a Legal Administrative Assistant certificate. JCCC is the only institution in the Kansas City metro area that offers this specialized option.

A nontraditional student, Melissa admits to being a little rusty in technology skills. “Before starting classes, I knew little to nothing about using a computer,” she said. ”I actually tried to stay away from them.”

She says she now has confidence when tackling tasks that require higher-level software knowledge. The BOT program equipped her with the skills she needed to land an internship at a local law firm.

Instructors behind the scenes

The program is set up for success with students earning certificates as they work toward completing an Associate of Applied Science degree. Jaymee Dunne is a JCCC graduate who appears in the video. She earned two certificates before achieving her AAS.

“Every one of my instructors wanted to help me reach goals,” said Jaymee, now an Administrative Support Specialist. “I learned so much by listening to real-world experiences from my teachers.”

Bump your pay, rewrite your résumé

BOT Professor and Chair Cherie Leiker points out that the program has excellent career opportunities for full-time or part-time positions and can provide skills that lead to advancement in a current job. “All options are here, and what you learn in this program will help you navigate careers throughout your life,” says Leiker.
