Celebrate this inspiring local journalist and learn about his professional journey.
Join us in honoring Jay Senter, founder and publisher of the Shawnee Mission Post and Blue Valley Post, which have been recognized by Harvard’s Nieman Lab and NPR’s Morning Edition as models for sustainable community news operations. They are among the most popular news sources in the area and cover local government, schools and business.
Hear how Senter discovered his passion and got his start in the news industry. Learn about his proudest accomplishments—and his biggest challenges. Find out what advice he has for aspiring journalists.
Raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Senter holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, where he was a recipient of the Calder Pickett Graduate Student Award.
Each year, JCCC’s Journalism and Media Communications department presents the Headline Award to a local media professional who inspires JCCC students and serves as an example of exemplary journalism. Past honorees include Steve Kraske, Kelly Eckerman, Maria Antonia, Tim Twyman, Yael Abouhalkah, CJ Janovy, Dave Helling, Phil Witt and Gary Lezak.
The event is free and open to all. No registration is required.
