DJ Ryan Westward gives his take on rockin’ many passions.

What is the most effective path to success? It’s not what you think.

Ryan Westward, DJ at 98.9 The Rock and former JCCC Broadcast Journalism student, will lead discussion on the Common Read selection for 2021-2022, “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World” by David Epstein.

Westward will speak to the truth of author David Epstein’s thesis that a lot of talented and successful people find professions by embracing a variety of interests. Westward is proof of this as he has been a scuba-diving filmmaking assistant, spent years in the radio industry, and is now a commercial pilot.

In his book, Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late and juggle many interests rather than focusing on one.
