Session Descriptions
Moving to Mastery: Culture and Conversation

A. Essentials of Debriefing

Many debriefing models exist in the literature. Oftentimes it is hard for facilitators to know which model to choose. This break out session focuses on a list of the essential elements of debriefing, all of which are literature based. These elements can be used regardless of whether one is facilitating an immersive or procedural simulation and regardless of whether the simulation is occurring in the simulation center or in situ. These essential elements are appropriate for all levels of learners whether they are students, new graduates, or practicing providers with years of experience.

  • List the seven essential elements of debriefing
  • Describe the components of an effective prebriefing

B. Role of the Embedded Simulation Person (ESP)

This session focuses on developing skills as an embedded simulation person (ESP) during a simulated experience. The role of an ESP may include a family member, nurse, healthcare provider, and many others. Topics include providing appropriate and timely cues as well as facilitating simulations that allow for optimal learning.

  • Identify strategies to improve facilitation of simulation through the role of the ESP
  • Apply various effective simulation facilitation techniques in the role of the ESP

C. Administration Basics

This session is intended for any individual who has administrative responsibilities within their simulation center. Topics include data collection strategies and uses, creating policies and procedures, and effective staffing. Participants will be asked to share their biggest challenge with respect to managing a simulation center.

  • Identify various uses of collected data
  • Explore policies relevant to any size simulation center

D. Technical Simulation Enhancements

This session focuses on enhancing the realism of simulation training through innovative moulage techniques and hybrid simulation devices in an effort to create a more immersive simulated experience. Participants will be presented with four unique ways to enhance simulations within their institution.

  • Discuss the effectiveness of hybrid simulation
  • Explore ways to increase fidelity using the senses

E. Operations Basics

This session is intended for any individual who is responsible for setting up simulation learning experiences and troubleshooting manikin and audio-visual difficulties. Participants will be asked to share their biggest challenge with respect to simulation operations. Tips for creating setup guides and manikin reference guides will be presented along with effective staffing strategies.

  • Discuss the various roles and responsibilities within operations
  • Describe the necessary elements of an in-depth setup guide

Workshop Sessions

A. Debriefing Techniques

Effective debriefings most often follow a specific structure with trained facilitators who are adept at using various techniques to uncover learner perspectives and knowledge gaps. This workshop will focus on evidence-based structures for debriefing as well as the necessary techniques debriefers can use to facilitate a meaningful learning conversation. Participants will have an opportunity to practice these techniques during the workshop. Note: This workshop is focused on debriefing for formative assessment.

  • List key structural elements in an effective debriefing
  • Compare and contrast three debriefing techniques that can be used to facilitate a meaningful learning conversation.

B. Advanced Debriefing for Immersive Simulation

This workshop is intended for experienced debriefers and focuses on handling difficult and sensitive situations that arise during debriefing. Participants will explore the fundamental causes of difficult debriefings and will be provided with strategies to help move the learning conversation forward despite high emotions. Participants will have the opportunity to practice these strategies during the workshop. Note: This workshop is focused on debriefing for formative assessment.

  • Explain the three fundamental causes of difficult debriefings
  • Describe three strategies for handling difficult situations when they arise in debriefing

C. Procedural Simulation and Coaching

The goal of procedural simulation is to train in a safe environment where a clinician’s skills can be developed without putting patients at risk. Using simulation based procedural training brings the clinician to a safety standard more rapidly than training without simulation. The purpose of this workshop is to assist those who teach procedures to develop the techniques required to facilitate quality simulation based procedural training. During the workshop, participants will be introduced to the framework for procedural skills acquisition and given the opportunity to practice coaching techniques to guide their learners through deliberate practice of procedural skills.

  • Describe the LSPPDM framework for procedural simulation
  • Explain effective coaching and feedback techniques

D. Executing Sim in Unconventional Spaces

This workshop is intended for simulation facilitators who are interested in deploying simulations in-situ (on location in unconventional spaces). The workshop will include an introduction to in-situ simulation, instruction in plus/delta debriefing, as well as tips for implementing meaningful simulations in unconventional spaces.

  • Describe three considerations for conducting simulations in unconventional spaces
  • Discuss lessons learned from implementing simulations in unconventional spaces

E. TeamSTEPPS:®Strategies for Improving Teamwork through Simulation

TeamSTEPPS® is an evidence-based program aimed at optimizing team performance in healthcare. This introductory workshop provides highlights of the TeamSTEPPS® key principles and strategies through interactive activities which allow participants to apply TeamSTEPPS® strategies. The workshop will conclude with suggestions for embedding TeamSTEPPS® strategies into immersive simulation. Learn more about TeamSTEPPS®.

  • Describe three TeamSTEPPS® tools that may be applicable for embedding into immersive simulation
  • Discuss lessons learned from using TeamSTEPPS® strategies
