The CLEAR Vocational Training Program (VTP) is a retail-based job skills curriculum designed to teach students necessary skills for employment success.

This two-semester program uses a multipronged approach to job skills: classroom learning, role-playing in a mock CVS Pharmacy retail setting, instructor and Career Center guidance in interview skills and résumé creation, and real-world intern/externships.

This program was created for students who are seeking to develop or improve their communication, customer service, problem solving, or overall job skills necessary for a work environment. Students will participate in a paid internship experience to implement the skills reviewed in the classroom. In class we will discuss how to handle certain situations, tasks, interactions, etc., that may arise in the work place. By the end of each semester, students that have successfully completed the course will be presented with a certificate certified through JCCC’s Continuing Education Department. By the end of the program, students will have obtained two (2) certificates that may be used when seeking future employment.

Class Descriptions

Semester 1: Vocational Training Course

The VTP Retail Skills Course entails a two-hour class where basic job skills like customer service, problem solving, stocking, and situational role playing are taught. Students must be able to attend this two-hour course as part of their CLEAR class schedule. If the student successfully completes the course work, they will receive their Vocational Training certificate and will be eligible to move on to the next course the following semester.

Semester 2: Job Development Course

The second semester consists of two parts: advanced classroom-based learning and a six-week paid work experience in an on-campus internship site. In the Job Development course, students will learn how to complete an application, build a résumé, participate in mock and legit interviews, and prepare for their work experience. The six-week work experience will take place during the CLEAR 14-week semester, but will be scheduled according to the student’s availability (i.e., outside of class time, etc.). Students will be interviewed by the internship site staff to determine eligibility. Guidance throughout the work experience will be provided to our students through the manager of the department, fellow employees, and the CLEAR staff. After successfully completing the 6-week internship and the classroom learning portion, students will be presented with their final Internship certificate.
