Afro-Mexican beats from the streets of LA pair with a leading contemporary Mexican ensemble.

Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana (guitar-like instrument), requinto guitar, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sings in English, Spanish and Spanglish, remixing sounds from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. The LA Times describes Las Cafeteras as a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock… live, they’re magnetic.”

Born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, the Villalobos Brothers are internationally acclaimed as one of today’s leading contemporary Mexican ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music. The ensemble’s performances delight audiences throughout the world in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and at events such as the Latin Grammy Awards and Montreal Jazz Festival. Their album “Somos” was released in 2019.

Both groups use music as a vehicle to build cultural bridges and create a world where many worlds fit.
