Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.


Class Format

Face-to Face Lecture and Lab

My lectures are generally a mixture of information written on the white board and images, photos and diagrams in PowerPoint to better illustrate concepts. Some lectures may include group work on small activities to introduce new topics. Quizzes are announced verbally and/or in the syllabus. These quizzes are given frequently so that I (and my students) can better evaluate how well the material is being retained prior to exam time. Quizzes and exams are based on the lectures and consist of a combination of multiple-choice questions, short answer questions and various calculations. The final exam is a multiple-choice departmental exam.

Laboratory time is generally divided between a short lecture covering the topic background, safety and the demonstration of new techniques regarding proper use of equipment. Students who arrive late and miss the safety discussion will not be allowed to participate in lab. Lab quizzes are used to evaluate prior reading and understanding of labs. The final lab exam is a lab practical where lab technique, calculations and results are all assessed.

Homework Policy

Daily practice of lecture and lab material in the form of homework and studying is essential in the process of learning and mastering new information. Online homework is assigned daily to help students keep pace with the content.

Attendance Policy

Although attendance is not used to contribute to the overall grade, there is a high direct correlation between good attendance and strong academic performance. Attendance will not be taken beyond the first two weeks of class. Students who miss class or labs will not have the opportunity to make up quizzes taken during that time or be able to turn in lab reports for exercises in which they did not participate. Students are responsible for reading the syllabus to determine what material was covered so they can read the appropriate chapters of the textbook and/or arrange to get notes from classmates. I am more than happy to explain concepts to students who do not understand them regardless of whether or not they attended class, but an honest effort must be made to catch up. Do not expect me to cover in 5 minutes (right before class or in an email) what took nearly two hours to cover with the class on the day you were not present.

Additional Information

I have taught various levels of chemistry for various audiences throughout my career. However, my passion and full time work for over 10 years has been teaching chemistry to high school students. My classroom motto for my high school students is “Be a proton, not an electron!” My activities outside of work include cooking, running, and spending time with family and friends.
