The Public Safety Training Center, in cooperation with several local law enforcement agencies, is proud to offer testing services for any individual interested in seeking the job of police officer.

These testing services include a comprehensive written test and a physical ability test, both given at the Johnson County Regional Police Academy at 12345 College Boulevard, Overland Park, KS, on the west side of the campus.

Below are brief descriptions of these testing services. You must be over 18 years of age and present a photo identification, such as a state driver's license or passport. Test takers should allow for up to four hours to take both tests.

The written test is the National Police Officer Selection Test, which is an entry-level selection instrument (computerized written test) that is required by many area police agencies.

This test is designed to measure basic skills — reading, writing, arithmetic — that are important for successfully learning and performing an entry-level law enforcement position. The test has four separate sections that take 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete.

The test is scored by Stanard and Associates in Chicago, Illinois. Test scores are emailed to test takers in approximately two weeks. A copy of the test scores are kept in a confidential file with the Public Safety Training Center at Johnson County Community College.

The physical ability test is a professionally validated job-related, and fair and objective physical ability examination. It was developed by Stanard and Associates of Chicago, in cooperation with 14 Johnson County area police agencies.

This physical examination was designed to increase the likelihood that newly-hired law enforcement officers will have the physical ability necessary to perform essential physical functions. It also ensures that current Johnson County agency law enforcement officers have the physical ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the job without having bias against individuals based on age, race, color, religion, gender or national origin.

The exam is a 200-yard obstacle course that involves running, jumping, ducking, stair-climbing and dragging a heavy object. Each applicant will have a specified minimum time to successfully complete this course. Test participants should wear loose workout clothing with athletic shoes. This is an outside course and it will be conducted regardless of weather. Appropriate coats and rainwear are suggested when applicable.
