A full-time employee who adopts a child or has a child placed in his/her home for foster care shall be eligible for a leave of absence for up to twelve (12) weeks in accordance with provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA - Family Medical Leave Act Information).
Appropriate documentation will be required to substantiate the need for the leave. Such documentation is to be provided by the employee to the Office of Human Resources at the time the request for leave is submitted. A full-time employee taking such leave shall be allowed to use up to twelve (12) weeks of his/her accrued sick leave time. The balance of any child adoption/placement leave an employee takes for which accrued sick leave benefits are not sufficient must be first charged to an employee's accrued vacation time and/or personal leave after which such leave shall be granted without pay.
If both parents are full-time employed by the College, then the combined number of workweeks of child adoption/placement leave, to which both may be entitled, will be limited to 12 workweeks during any 12-month period. The two employees will have the freedom to determine how the 12 workweeks will be divided among them. Employees taking such leave shall be allowed to use up to twelve (12) weeks of their accrued sick leave time. The balance of any child adoption/placement leave an employee takes for which accrued sick leave benefits are not sufficient must be first charged to an employee's accrued vacation time and/or personal leave after which such leave shall be granted without pay.
