Projects and Programs

A key element of the JCCC Strategic Plan approved by the college’s Board of Trustees is that the college will “champion environmental sustainability in the curriculum and in the college infrastructure, transforming the physical campus into a living, learning laboratory.” A number of projects are underway toward making this rhetoric a reality. A few are highlighted below:

Southeast Quadrant Stormwater Project
JCCC Completed its $700,00 stormwater treatment project in the southeast corner of campus in August, 2010.

JCCC Farm
In fall 2010, the northwest corner of campus was plowed to create what has now become a 2.5 acre farm, returning that portion of campus to the landscape it had been 40 years ago.

Solar-powered Composting
Our program will be one of the few composting programs in the United States using solar technology to turn food waste into a valuable soil amendment which will then be incorporated back into JCCC's farm.

Children's Garden
Kids at the Hiersteiner Child Development Center learn that fruits and vegetables are fun and tasty.

BigBelly Solar Trash Compactor and Recycling Unit
JCCC has installed three BigBelly solar trash compactor and recycling units on campus.
