About me: Gandhi said that we should “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” I hope to show our community that this is a belief that we should all support. As a participant in Student Senate, Model United Nations and International Club, I regard myself as a representative of the student body, and I will set out to help empower our community as a group of individual leaders. I believe in working for what I want while being content with what I already have. I believe in showing love and compassion through my life's work. I believe that money isn't everything, but making a positive impact in the lives of the people around me is. I will maintain consideration for any and all beliefs. I believe, as Thomas Jefferson believed, that maintaining the inalienable rights of all is most important. Our world is hurting; we need to be prepared for how to handle the problems we face. I will do my best to prepare myself, as well as my peers, for the challenges that lie ahead of us.
Name: Elysia Chao
Hometown: Overland Park, KS
Major: International Business with an emphasis on entrepreneurship
Senate Committees: Service and Fundraising, Inter-Club and Activities Council
About me: I began attending JCCC in the summer of 2013, when I became a Student Activities Ambassador. Involvement in Student Senate, International Club and Model United Nations were ways I branched out and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. The experiences I had helped me grow, not only as a student, but as an individual. I want to pass on the things I have learned so that others can be more prepared for their first semester, whether they are coming straight out of high school, or if they are a non-traditional student. As Vice-President, I aim to ensure that Student Senate continues to lead by example, exceed expectations, and impact more students and clubs. I would like to see us work to set standards for accountability, maintain transparency and effective communication, as well as obtain more regular feedback from our peers. In addition, I encourage Senate members to mentor and be leaders in and out of school, helping to develop relationships and connections amongst students so that students can create lasting relationships that reach beyond the halls and classrooms of JCCC.
Name: Josh Powers
Hometown: La Mesa, CA
Major: English and Psychology
Senate Committees: Rules and Conduct
About me: I have been at JCCC since Fall 2013 and have not previously served in Student Senate. Since I’ve enrolled at Johnson County, I’ve continued to find ways to involve myself with in the student community, from the Cavalier Leadership Development Program to JCCC’s chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon (American Criminal Justice Associate), Zeta Rho Omega. I joined the Senate Executive Board to solidify myself as a leader and to gain the leadership experience that I will one day need for a career in law enforcement. My mission in Senate is to promote active involvement in any club or organization that interests an individual of the student body. Your participation in these groups will develop lifelong communication skills, networking connections, and personal experiences you are sure never to forget. Join something. If you’re not sure where to start, join Senate. I look forward to serving for you, or with you, as the Parliamentarian.
Name: Mpho Kekana
Hometown: Mamelodi, South Africa
Major: Marketing and Management
Senate Committees: Public Relations
About Me: I was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. After working in Scotland for a few years, I went back to SA and studied Advertising. In 2012, the opportunity to come to the U.S. arose, and I jumped at it. JCCC has brought the best out of me in both my academic and professional ambitions. I am so grateful to be in an institution that provides this many opportunities for international students. I joined Student Senate, because if I can be for one student what so many people at this college have been for me, then I will graduate happy. There are so many intelligent, ambitious students at this college who aren’t as vocal as many of the other people we regularly see. We should give them a voice!
Name: Ricardo Aristiguieta
Hometown: Caracas, Venezuela
Major: Marketing and Management, Accounting
Senate Committees: Service and Fundraising, Budget
About Me: I am an international student from Venezuela. I am currently in my fourth semester in the marketing and management program at JCCC. My goal is to help create new experiences through software and new technologies. I have learned so much in this last year and a half from my teachers, classmates and co-workers. I believe we should always give back to our communities so that everyone can grow. As the Treasurer, I will work hard with the Budget Committee, Service and Fundraising and the Student Senate to help the college as a whole.
