Volleyball - No. 4 JCCC to battle No. 1 Coffeyville tonight

JCCC vs. CoffeyvilleOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Only two teams in National Junior College Athletic Association Division II volleyball have held the No. 1 ranking during the regular season in 2018, and those two teams will face off tonight.  Number 4 Johnson County Community College (24-4) will travel to No. 1 Coffeyville Community College (29-2) with the winner claiming sole possession of first place in the East Jayhawk Conference race.

Coffeyville held the top spot in the first three polls of the regular season. The Lady Cavaliers took over at the country’s No. 1 team on Sept. 25, and stayed there for one more week. They fell to No. 3 last week and dropped one more spot to fourth in this week’s poll.

Both teams are undefeated in conference play. Johnson County stands 7-0, with Coffeyville posting a 6-0 conference mark. The Red Ravens won the D-II national championship last year, the first in program history.

Johnson County was the national champion in 2005, and finished as the national runner-up in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The Lady Cavaliers lead the all-time series with Coffeyville 55-to-8, but the Red Ravens have won four straight dating back to 2015.

Johnson County has three players that rank among the top-10 statistically in the conference. Freshman libero Rylie Barnum lead the conference in digs with 588. That currently has her tied for sixth in a season at JCCC.

Sophomore setter Jade Askren is fourth in the KJCCC with 1,010 assists, which places her 12th on the season chart in team history.  She ranks seventh all-time with 1,718 over her two seasons.

Sophomore hitter Anna Hester ranks sixth in the conference with 355 kills. That total currently has her tied for 20th on the team’s season chart.  For her career, Hester has compiled 613 kills, good for 14th on the career chart.
