W. Soccer - Lady Cavaliers down No. 14 Butler

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After suffering a disappointing 3-3 tie with Kansas City Kansas Community College Friday afternoon, the Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team rebounded with its best effort of the season by downing No. 14 ranked Butler Community College 4-1, Monday at JCCC’s soccer field. The four goals are the second most ever scored by the Lady Cavaliers in the 30-game series with Butler.

JCCC All-American sophomore defender Georgia Vernardakis got the Lady Cavaliers on the board first at 7:57 with her fifth goal of the season. Freshman Liz Palmer provided the assist.

Ten minutes later Butler sophomore Zion DeWerff tied the game at one apiece, but Johnson County quickly answered when freshman Kayla Brasher found sophomore Manuela Gonzalez at 19:49 for a 2-1.

Early in the second half, Butler was putting pressure on JCCC’s defense, and nearly tied the game, but the shot bounced off the post. After that miss, the momentum appeared two switch to the Johnson County side of the field.

Palmer scored off a feed from freshman Megan Nugent in the 66th minute, and the Lady Cavaliers put the game away their fourth goal in the 83rd minute by Aaliyah Pierce, and Brasher earned her second assist of the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Silva was solid in the nets. She record 16 saves in the game, 10 coming in the second half when Butler was making a push.

Johnson County has two remaining games in the regular season. They travel to Coffeyville Community College (9-5-0/5-5-0) on Wednesday, Oct. 17, then host Neosho County Community College (10-7-0/5-5-0) on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
