Track - JCCC hosts Cavalier Night Relays

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College’s track and field teams made their second appearance of the season when they hosted the 19-team field Cavalier Night Relays on Friday evening, Jan. 19.

The top performer for the Lady Cavaliers was freshman Dayan Morales. She captured medalist honors in the pole vault with a national qualifying mark of 10-feet (3.05m).  She is the first JCCC athlete to earn a spot to compete at the NJCAA Indoor Championships March 2-3 in Lubbock, Texas.

Sophomore Yulissa DelaTorre was also medalist in the mile run. She crossed the finish line in 5:49.11 to get the win.

Sophomore Gretchen Fiebig had two quality performances in jumping events. She placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 33-feet, 3.75 inches (10.15m), and sixth in the long jump with an effort of 16-feet, 5.5 inches (5.02m).

For the men, sophomores Sam Hengeli and Kyle McRoberts finished among the top four in the 3,000-meters. Hengeli was second with a time of 9:03.34, just 1.1 behind the leader. McRoberts placed fourth with a time of 9:04.33.

In the men’s mile run, JCCC sophomore Ducan Gakuru raced to a fourth-place showing with a time of 4:35.25.

The JCCC track teams travel to Pittsburg, Kan., Saturday, Jan. 27 to compete in the Pittsburg State University Invitational. They return home to host the Cavalier Indoor Open on Friday, Feb. 2 for a final time.
