W. Basketball - JCCC gets a win and loss on Saturday

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 12th ranked Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team experienced both a victory and a loss on Saturday at Hesston College. The Lady Cavaliers cruised to a 78-62 victory over the Larks to improve to 23-7 and put themselves in a two-way with Labette Community College for second place in the region standings.

After exhausting all the possible tie breakers, it came to down a flip of a coin to determine which team would receive the No. 2 seed and first round bye in the upcoming Region VI Playoffs. Johnson County lost that flip, and fell to the No. 3 seed and will now turnaround and host Hesston on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in a first-round match up. The winner advances to take on Labette in Parsons, Kan., on Saturday, March 3.

In the win over the Larks, sophomore guard Tristen McFeders led all scorers with 23 points. She hit 9-of-17 shots, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and made three free throws. She also three assists, two rebounds and a blocked shot.

Sophomore Cerena Reeves and Kylee Williams each finished with 12 points, and freshman guard Paige Elston added 10 point, five boards and three steals.

In the first meeting with Hesston at JCCC, the Lady Cavaliers walloped the Lark 97-34, and outscored Hesston 32-2 in the second period. Johnson County has never lost to Hesston, winning all 50 meetings. This will be their 12th meeting in the postseason.
