M. Basketball - Cavaliers season comes to a disappointing end

OVERLAND PARK, KAN. – After Johnson County Community College went undefeated in the Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference this season, and the team entered postseason play optimistic about its chances to return to the NJCAA D-II Tournament for a second straight year.  Johnson County’ momentum came crashing down on Saturday afternoon, as the Cavaliers suffered a 21-point home loss to Labette Community College 79-58, ending JCCC’s season.

Johnson County went through a variety of ups and downs throughout the 2017-18 campaign. They opened the season losing six straight and early January their record stood at 4-12. Then lightning struck and the Cavaliers embarked on a 13-game winning streak, the second longest in team history. They closed out the season with back-to-back loses, falling by one point at Hesston, and by double digits to Labette in the region semifinals.

Sophomore Anthony Lupardus led Johnson County with 20 points, going 8-of-17 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3- point range. He also had four rebounds and five assists. Lupardus closes out this JCCC career with 1,161 points, third all-time, and he set a career record making 192 3-point baskets.

Freshman guard Meli McKinney came in off the bench to pour in 14 points. He hit 5-of-7 shots and was 4-of-6 at the line. Sophomore guard Marqauwn Wilson put in a solid effort in his final game as a Cavaliers, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Kashawn Charles came in off the bench to lead five Cardinals in double figures. He finished with 18 points. Larenz Nero and Traveon Palmer each had 15 points, and Frank Royals and Jan Van Selst contributed 10 points each. Van Selst was game’s top rebounder with 14.

Johnson County ends the 2017-18 season with a record of 17-14.
