Baseball - Cavaliers picked 17th in NJCAA poll

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Over the last four seasons, the Johnson County Community College baseball program has averaged 48 wins and have been in contention to win the region championship each year.

With that type of success, it is not surprising that the Cavaliers have been picked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Baseball Preseason Poll that was released last week.  Johnson County also appears in the rankings by Perfect Game, holding down the 37th spot.

“It is nice to recognized in these preseason polls, but it absolutely means nothing at this time,” said JCCC head coach Kent Shelley. “It simply means some people think we have a good chance to be pretty good this year. I have always looked at polls as something that is good for recruiting, alums and fans, but I don’t put a lot of stock into them. If we are still in the rankings at the end of the season, then I’ll know we had a pretty good year.”

Shelley returns 13 players from last season, including four all-conference performers. Shelley has also added one sophomore transfer and 20 talented true freshmen.

“We can look good on paper and have all this talent, but I remind the kids that we still have not won a game this season,” said Shelley. “With that said, I do believe we have a chance to be good at some point during the season. We’ve set our bar extremely high, and we are working to repeat as conference and region champions, return to the World Series and bring home our program’s first national title. If the stars align, we have an opportunity.”

The Cavaliers open its 2018 season in Milllington, Tenn., Feb. 9 with games against Volunteer State, John A. Logan, Dyersburg State and Olney Central. They host Ellsworth on Feb. 16 for their season home opener, and begin conference play against Cowley on March 1.
