M. Basketball - Cavaliers down rival KCKCC by 35 in region opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - In the first game of Region VI and Kansas Jayhawk Conference play, the Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team (9-12, 1-0) put together a complete effort in an 87-52 win over cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas Community College (7-14, 0-1) at JCCC Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Trailing by two (7-5) after three minutes of play, the Cavaliers went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to take control, and they built their lead to 18 at the break, 37-19. Johnson County opened the second half on a 12-2 run and cruised to the 35-point win over the Blue Devils.

Four Cavaliers finished in double figures led by freshman guard Berlin Roberson with 19 points. He was 6-of-9 from the field, including five 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Anthony Lupardus, this week’s KJCCC and NJCAA Player of the Week, followed with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also contributed six assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Sophomore guard Marquawn Wilson also had a hot hand, hitting 5-of-7 shots, including all three 3-point attempts and two free throws to post 15 points, and Mat Baldeh poured in 11 after making his first start since Dec. 6.

Freshman General Williams added nine points and six boards, and freshman Meli McKinney contributed seven points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Cavaliers.

Overall, Johnson County shot 52 percent on the night while holding the Blue Devils to 36 percent. Not one KCKCC player reach double digits. They were led by Juwan Davenport and Sterling Hicks each with nine points.

Johnson County travels to face Highland Community College (16-5, 1-0) on Saturday, Jan. 27, followed by a road trip to Labette Community College (10-11, 0-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
