M. Basketball - Cavaliers 13-game win streak snapped

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team saw its second-longest win streak in team history come to an end Saturday afternoon, as the Cavaliers fell 79-78 at Hesston College, snapping a 13-game win streak.  Despite the setback, the Johnson County still is the No. 1 seed heading into the Region VI playoffs this week. The finish the regular season with a 17-14 record.

JCCC freshman forward Xavier Womack had a big game, finishing with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Berlin Roberson followed with 18 points and five assists, and sophomore guard Anthony Lupardus and freshman guard General Williams followed with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Johnson County nearly pulled out the victory though. Trailing by eight with 1:23 to play, Lupardus made two-point jump shot, and with just under a minute to play, Roberson cut the deficit to three points with a 3-pointer. Williams then got a steal and dunk to make it 79-78 with 20 second left on the clock.

Johnson County then fouled Hesston’s Aubrey Johnson, and he missed the front end of the one-and-one, and Womack grabbed the miss and quickly called timeout.

On the inbounds play, Womack missed a shot and Hesston got the rebounds, but then turned the ball back over to the Cavaliers. Roberson fired up a 3-point shot as the buzzer sounded, but it was off the mark and Hesston survived the Johnson County run.

As the No. 1 seed in the Region VI Tournament, the Cavaliers receive a first-round bye. They will host the winner of Labette and Hesston on Saturday, March 3 at 4 p.m., in the region semifinal. The championship game will take place at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan., on March 7. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
