Baseball - Stanek named NJCAA All-American

Brendan StanekOVERLAND PARK, Kan. –Brendan Stanek put up some big numbers and posted one of the finest seasons for a pitcher in Johnson County Community College during his final season in a Cavaliers uniform. On Monday, he was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I All-America third-team. Earlier this year he was selected to the Kansas Jayhawk Conference and Region VI first-teams.

Stanek finished the 2017 season with a perfect 8-0 record with an earned run average of 1.48 and 72 strikeouts. He started 13 games, completing five with three shutouts, which ranked third in the NJCAA. His 1.48 ERA led the Kansas Jayhawk Conference and was the seventh-best in the country. During the season, Stanek was named the Jayhawk Conference Pitcher of the Week four times, most by any player in the conference. He pitched two one-hitters and a two-hitter during the campaign.

Stanek’s production in 2017 was up significantly from his freshman season where he was 2-1 with an ERA of 8.86 over 22.1 innings logged.

JCCC head coach Kent Shelley said the biggest difference from this year to his freshman year was his ability to throw first pitch strikes and work in pitchers’ counts versus hitter’s counts.

“He worked ahead in the counts,” Shelley said. “He hit the weight room hard too and got physically stronger, and he just continues to learn the difference between just throwing and how to truly pitch. He also developed a nice rhythm and tempo to his pitching which I feel contributed to his success.”

Stanek will continue his academic and athletic careers at Pittsburg State University this fall.
