Cross Country - McRoberts and Dela Torre lead their teams at the Region Championships

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Led by a solid performance from sophomore Kyle McRoberts, the Johnson County Community College men’s cross country team placed fifth at the NJCAA Region VI Championships on Monday at Garden City, Kan.  The team also finished third overall in the East Jayhawk Conference standings.

McRoberts navigated the 8k course in 26:53.8 to place fifth overall in the region. It is JCCC’s first top five finisher in 11 years. The last to finish in the top five was James Tong in 2006 when he placed third. Overall, McRoberts is the ninth individual in team history to post a top five effort. McRoberts runner-up in the conference standing. Those two finishes earned McRoberts All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk Conference recognition.

The Cavaliers had three other runners finish among the top 25. Sophomore Duncan Gakuru placed 21st with a time of 27:48.9. He was followed by sophomores Sam Hengeli (23rd-27:54.3) and Brendan McRoberts (24th-27:58.2).

Sophomore Souleymane Adam (63rd-29:49.7) and freshman Trey Seaba (66th30:07.3) rounded out Johnson County’s top six.

For the women’s team, sophomore Yulissa Dela Torre earned both All-Region and All-East Jayhawk Conference honors by placing ninth in the region and sixth in the conference. She finished the 5k course in 20:38.4.

Sophomore Jessalyn Rivet-Tissot raced to a 49th place finish in 22:22.3. Following her were freshman Emma Staimatze (82nd-24:43.0), freshman Jacinta King (91st-26:00.0) and freshman Mikayla Lisher (97th-28:48.4).

Their efforts helped the to a 10th place region team finish, and a fourth place finish in the conference.

Both teams will compete for the final time in team history when they travel to Fort Dodge, Iowa and the campus of Iowa Central Community College for the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships. The college is suspending the program at the end of this campaign.
