Track - JCCC track and field teams compete at KU Relays

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women’s and men’s track and field teams recently competed at the Kanas Relays in Lawrence, Kan., and came away with some solid performances. Four members of the women’s team, and one from the men’s team posted national qualifying marks, and eighth athletes established new personal-best marks or times.

Sophomore high jumper Lara Spaulding posted her highest finish of the 2017 season, placing in a tie for fifth clearing 5-feet, 3-inches (1.60m). Her fifth place effort was the team’s highest place at the KU Relays.

In the 1,500-meter run, all five JCCC participants established season-best times. Freshman Yulissa Dela Torre and sophomore Emily Ellis finished 14th and 15th overall with times of 4:58.80 and 4:59.08. Both those times qualified tem for outdoor nationals next month. Sophomore Colleen Russell placed 21st with a time of 5:08.73, followed by sophomore Alexis Almloff in 22nd place with a time of 5:09.00.  Freshman Jessalyn Rivet-Tissot crossed the line in 29th place with a time of 5:30.53.

Sophomore throwers Lexi Pint and Amanda Whitney each posted national qualifying marks in their field events. Pint placed ninth in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 128-feet, 7-inches (39.21m), and Whitney placed 21st in the hammer with a mark of 145-feet, 10-inches (44.46m).

Freshman Ciara Thuston set a personal-best time in the 800-meter run of 2:23.32, good for a 17th place finish.

On the men’s side, sophomore Carter Grissom posted qualifying mark in the javelin with a heave of 183-feet, 1-inch, good for an 11th place finish.

Freshmen Laurel Heath and Jacoby Greenwood each recorded personal-best times in their events. Heath finished the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.85 and placed 12th overall. Greenwood posted a time of 15.13 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles preliminary round.

Greenwood, Heath and freshmen Sam Hengeli and Kyle McRoberts teamed to race in the distance medley relay. The four-some came in sixth overall with a time of 10:41.82.

In the jump events, sophomores Jacob Buchanan and Jack Hill had solid efforts. Buchanan placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 22-feet, 3.75-inches (6.80m) and ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-feet, 4-inches (12.29m). Hill was 10th in the long jump at 21-feet, 3.5-inches (6.49m) and seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 42-feet, 4.75-inches (12.92m).
