Softball - JCCC sweeps Coffeyvilile in Region VI first round

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson Count Community College softball team made quick work in their Region VI Tournament first-round series, blanking Coffeyville Community College twice, 8-0 and 6-0. The sweep of the best 2-out-3 series advances the Lady Cavaliers to the semifinals of the District D Tournament at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kan., May 6-7.

Johnson County will face No. 9 seed Allen Community College after they upset No. 6 seed Cloud County Community College, Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. on May 6.  The winner of the District D Tournament will earn a spot in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament May 17-20, at Traceway Park in Clinton, Miss.

In the opening 8-0 win over the Red Ravens, sophomore third baseman Taylor Kirk belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open.  Johnson County led 5-0 after her blast, and they would tack one in the fourth and two in the fifth to enforce the 8-0 run rule after five innings.

Freshman center fielder Bayleigh Nelson went 4-for-4 with a triple and RBI. Freshman first baseman Courtney Nemechek was 3-for-3 and scored twice, and freshmen DP Sammi Bates and shortstop each had two hits and drove in a run for the Lady Cavaliers.

Sophomore pitcher Megan Dieter hurled a two-hitter and struck out 11. She was even better in the second game, allowing just one hit with 13 strikeouts. She now stands 18-2 and season and leads the Jayhawk Conference with a 1.33 ERA. She also leads the conference and ranks third nationally with 206 strikeouts.

At the plate, freshman DP Tamara Hicks and Kirk had the big bats. Hicks had two singles and drove in three runs. Kirk hit a double and a solo home run. Bates and Nemechek each drove in a run with a single.
