Baseball - Comeback falls short for JCCC, ending region championship run

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A furious late-inning rally for the Johnson County Community College baseball team came up just short, as the Cavaliers dropped an 9-8 decision to Neosho County Community College in the Region VI Tournament at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Monday afternoon.

The loss was Johnson County’s second in the double elimination tournament, ending its season with a 46-16 overall record and a No. 14 national ranking.

The Cavaliers trailed 9-0 before getting its offense on track in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run home run off the bat of sophomore Maurice Bruce. Johnson County cut the deficit to five runs with two more in the eighth off RBI singles from sophomores Brandt Ollinger and Tory Daring, Jr.

Trailing by five runs and down to their final out, Johnson County managed to have the tying and go-ahead runs on base when the third out was recorded, ending the game at 9-8.

Freshman Daonte Lowery began the inning with a double, and moved to third on a ground out by sophomore Nick McMurry. He then scored on a ground out RBI by freshman Brian Sullivan.

With two outs, sophomore Matt Warketin hit solo home run, followed by a two-run shot by Ollinger after freshman Tanner Padgett got on base with a walk.

With the scored at 9-8, Daring, Jr. drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by freshman catcher Jake Karst. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers that would be where their rally would come to an end. Bruce, who got the rally going to begin with in the seventh, popped out to the catcher for the final out.
