M. Soccer - Cavaliers keep playoff hopes alive with 5-1 win

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer need a victory over Allen Community College yesterday to keep its playoff hopes alive and the Cavaliers came through with a 5-1 victory.  JCCC is currently in fourth place at 4-5-1 and are two games ahead of fifth place Coffeyville Community College, but the Ravens still have two games remaining.

Johnson County found themselves facing a 1-0 deficit just four minutes into the match after Juan Galvan successfully converted a penalty kick attempt. The Cavaliers freshman goalkeeper Luis Alanis was given a yellow card and had to come out of the game. Freshman Colton Smith faced the penalty kick.

After that it was all Johnson County. The Cavaliers scored three times in the first half and added two more in the second and swept the season series with the Red Devils.

Freshman Sung Min Cho, this week’s conference player of the week, scored the Cavaliers first goal in the 11th minute, giving him a team-high seven scores on the season. Freshman Sam Mayeske was credited with the assist.

Sophomore Akolade Gbadebo followed with a pair of goals, scoring in the 20th and 30th minutes off feeds from Smith and Mayeske.

Sophomore Chance Beckham and freshman Marwat Bakit helped put the game away in the second half with scoring shots.  Sophomore Derrick McClanahan assisted on both goals.

Johnson County will now wait to find out where they playoff fate lies. The Region VI Tournament begins next Thursday, Oct. 26 with first round action, followed by second round action on Sunday, Oct. 29. The semifinals and final will take place at Hummer Park in Topeka, Kan., Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5.
