Cross Country - Cavaliers finish off final season at half marathon

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams completed the final chapter in the program’s history last weekend competing in the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships in Topeka, Kan. Both teams finished in the top 10, with the men coming in sixth and women ninth.

Sophomores Kyle Roberts and Duncan Gakuru paced the men’s team. McRoberts finished the 13.1 mile course in 1:14:20.3 to place 15th overall, and Gakuru cross the finish line in 18th place with a time of 1:14:53.1. Those performances earned both runner NJCAA Coaches All-America honors. Roberts earned Coaches All-American a week earlier at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships, and raced to All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk Conference honors at those respective championships at the end of October.

Rounding out the men’s competitors were sophomore Sam Hengeli (28th – 1:17:18.0), sophomore Brendan McRoberts (30th – 1:18:15.3) and freshman Trey Seaba (44th – 1:22:16.9).

For the women, sophomore Yulissa DelaTorre was the team’s top runner. She placed 36th overall with a time of 1:43.18.5. Prior to the half marathon, DelaTorre garnered both All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk Conference honors and was the team’s top performer at cross country nationals placing 54th.

The Lady Cavaliers other two participants were sophomore Jessalyn Rivet-Tissot (40th – 1:46:11.5) and freshman Emma Stimatze (45th – 1:51:45.8).

All eight are expected to compete for JCCC’s final track and field season this winter and spring. The indoor season opens Friday, January 12 at the Cavalier Invitational in the Fieldhouse capped by the NJCAA Indoor Championships March 2-3 in Lubbock Texas on the campus of Texas Tech University. The outdoor season gets under way on Saturday March 31 at the Emporia State Relays and concluded May 17-19 at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan.
