M. Basketball - Cavaliers comeback fall short in 67-61 loss

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team managed to erase a 20-point first half deficit North Central Missouri College and tie the game late, before the Pirates managed to pull out a victory, 67-61, Tuesday night.

The Pirates built the big first half lead by knocking down shots and converting at the free throw line. North Central Missouri shot 60 percent from the field, and 64 percent from three-point range. The also hit 80 percent at the, converting on 12-of-15 attempts. Johnson County hit only 34 percent and was 2-of-13 from 3-point range.

Trailing 49-31 at the break, the Cavaliers were able to gradually chip away at North Central Missouri’s lead by playing sound half-court defense. As hot as the Pirates were in the first half, they were equally cold in the second, making just 3-of-23 shot and 1-of-7 treys. Their key to the victory came at the line. North Central Missouri made 16 attempts in the second half to only two for the Cavaliers.

Sophomore guard Anthony Lupardus was the only Cavalier to finish in double figures. He finished with 22 points, connecting on eight field goals, including four treys, and two free throws. He also four assists and three steals. Sophomore Marquawn Wilson and freshman Meli McKinney each contributed nine points

Jalen Gant led the Pirates with 28 points. He was 7-of-16 from the field and 14-of-21 at the line. Ryan Ward followed with 20 points.

With the loss, Johnson County falls to 0-6 on the season. They travel to Highland, Kan., this weekend for two neutral court matchups against Briar Cliff University JV on Friday afternoon, followed by a Saturday afternoon game with newest member of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference, Northwest Kansas Technical.  They return home to host Washburn University JV on Monday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
