Baseball - Cavaliers advance to Wichita with series win over Butler

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College baseball team took the three game series with Butler Community College in the opening round of the Central District Tournament, and advance to the Wichita for the championship portion of the tournament May 12-16.

In the deciding game on Sunday, May 7, sophomore first baseman Matt Warkentin’s two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to the winning blow in a 4-2 victory for the Cavaliers. Warkentin added an RBI triple in the seventh provided the final margin in the game.

Sophomore left-hander Tyler LaPlante got the start on the hill, and posted a solid effort. He allowed just two runs off three hits and struck out eight in his six innings of work. Freshman Briley Buckley pitched three scoreless in relief with six strikeouts.

Johnson County opened the series with a 5-1 win over the Grizzlies. Sophomore right-hander Brendan Stanek and Buckley combined for 16 strikeouts in the win. Stanek went the first 5.1 inning, allowing just two hits and one run with 11 punched out. Buckley allowed just one hit with five strikeouts in 3.1 scoreless innings.

At the plate, freshman Tanner Padgett’s two-run home run in the seventh broke open the game and gave the Cavaliers a 4-1 lead. Padgett doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth on a RBI by Matt Johnson.

In the second game, Butler managed to force a third and deciding game with a 4-3 win over the Cavaliers, despite a solid outing from sophomore left-hander Davis Schwab. His only big mistake led to a three-run homer in the first off the bat of Grizzly left fielder Connor Hurst. After that, Schwab allowed just one unearned run and struck out 10 batters.

After a solo homer by sophomore Maurice Bruce in the bottom of the first inning, the Cavaliers were held in check before mounting a ninth inning rally that came up one run short.

Johnson County will take on Dodge City Community College at 7 p.m., Friday, May 12 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita. The winner will play at 7 p.m., Saturday May 13 against the Hutchinson/Kansas City Kansas winner. The losers of both games will meet at 1 p.m., on the May 13th in an elimination game.
