Softball - Bates and Deiter selected NJCAA All-Americans

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College softball players Sammi Bates and Megan Deiter were recently named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-Americans.  Bates, a freshman outfielder, was named first-team, and Deiter, a sophomore pitcher, was awarded second-team honors. Both played a big role in leading Johnson County to a 35-7 record and fifth place finish at the 2017 NJCAA D-II Softball Championships.  They become the 43rd and 44th softball players at JCCC to be selected All-American by they NJCAA. 

Bates and Deiter were also selected All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference first-team performers for the season. Additionally, Bates was selected the KJCCC Freshman of the Year, and Deiter was a unanimous selection for MVP honors for the conference. 

Bates ranked 10th in the NJCAA and led the Kansas Jayhawk Conference with a batting average of .520, going 64-for-123. She also led the team with 10 doubles and seven home runs, and was second in runs driven in with 37. Bates also finished with 17 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games on the season, and a perfect fielding mark playing right field for the Lady Cavaliers. 

Deiter finished with a record of 22-4 with an ERA of 2.00 in 153.2 innings pitched. She also completed 21 of her 25 starts and had nine shutouts. Her 22 victories ranked sixth in the NJCAA.  Deiter also finished second in the NJCAA with a strikeout per game ratio of 11.16 and ranked third nationally with 245 strikeouts. Deiter also recorded 14 double-digit strikeout games and hurled a no-hitter. During the season, Deiter was selected the KJCCC D-II Pitcher of the Week four times, and national Pitcher of the Week once.
