Track - Men second, women sixth at Darrell Gourley Open

Alex GutierrezOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College track and field teams traveled to Liberty, Mo., on Saturday to compete in the Darrel Gourley Open hosted by William Jewell College. The event, named for long Jewell coach Darrel Gourley, brought 26 teams and over 850 student-athletes to the Jewell Campus. The Johnson County men placed second overall, while the women came in sixth place.

The JCCC men scored points in 12 events, including two first place finishes and one second place finish, on their way to 85 points.

Sophomore Alexander Gutierrez won the high jump clearing 6-feet, 9.75-inches (2.08m), matching his season best mark.  Sophomore Josh Washington took home fourth place points clearing 6-feet, 4.75-inches.

Freshman distance runner Edgar Renteria took home the individual honor in the 10,000-meter run, clocking in at 33:43.06. That time also earned him a spot at NJCAA Nationals in May. Freshman Cyrus Meuma and posted a national qualifying mark (NQM) in the race, placing fourth with a time of 34:48.84.

Sophomore Aaron Thacker sprinted to a runner-up finish in the 200-meters. His time of 21.62 bettered his previous season best by .73 of a second. Another sophomore sprinter, Roy Bay, took home fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.83, just 0.06 shy of his season best to date. Those two also ran the second and third legs on the Cavaliers’ 4x100 relay that placed third in 42.82. Also running were freshman Samuel Thomas and sophomore Dajuan Washington-Box.

The 4x400 relay team also posted a third place finish. Freshman Jayme Allen led off the race, followed by Washington-Box, freshman Clement Barbier and freshman Kyle Kieborz.

Barbier and Allen also turned in national qualifying marks in individual events; Barbier in the 110-meter hurdles, and Allen in the 800-meter run.  Barbier posted the second best time in the preliminary round of 14.83. In the final, he placed third despite improving his time to 14.63. Allen placed fourth in the 800 clocking in with a persona-best time of 1:55.46, just under three seconds faster than his previous best this season.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase the Cavaliers picked up multiple points from sophomore Sam Schmidt and freshman Ryan Anderson. Schmidt placed third with a time of 10:14.15, and Anderson was two back in fifth place with a time of 10:35.90.

Others with key performance for the men were: sophomore Rashard Young in 400-meters(4th  - 48.82), freshman Malik Jefferson (7th -  13-9.25) and freshman Jack Hill in the triple jump (8th – 40-11.75).

On the women’s side, tallied 53.5 points in nine events, including one event winner. Sophomore Lexi Pint took medalist honors in the javelin with a winning throw of 129-feet, 3-inches (39.41).  Two spot back in third place was sophomore teammate Kayla VerMulm with a mark of 116-feet, 2-inches (35.41m). Both marks punched their tickets to outdoor nationals.

Johnson County also picked up multiple points in the 10,000-meter run. Freshmen Breanna Barney and Emily Williams finished second and third while posting national qualifying times.

Sophomore Justine Paton cleared 5-feet, 1-inches to place third in the high jump, and freshman Brook Dotson took home fourth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:36.70.

Sophomore sprinter Ryan Beard picked up seventh place points in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.44 seconds, and freshman Sabrina Gretzmacher was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds.

Johnson County’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays raced to fifth place finishes. Beard and Gretzmacher ran legs on the 4x100 along with sophomore Areka Hanson and freshman Re’yven Lawrence.  Freshman Drue Bailey and sophomore Jasmine Wayne were teamed with Hanson and Lawrence to comprise the 4x800 team.
